Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Useful Design Manual   July 5, 2005

I bought this book expecting it to read it and find it full of useful advice and plans. On first reading, I missed the point. Having come back to it as a reference book, I now see that it is full of articles about little bite-sized bits of railway and operations that you can knit together with Cyril's guidance to form the layout you want. There are track plan designs for you to take inspiration from - this is an excellent design manual and I believe I have a better railway because of it.

4 out of 5 stars Want a model railway but don't know where to start?   April 13, 2003

Cyril Freezer is perhaps the first model railway author that any one reads and he is quite extensively published. Not only that but he has a style that is easy to follow.

His books all deal with the basic areas of the hobby and this is no exception but it is focussed on planning, starting and more importantly completing a model railway. Throughout the book, descriptions are augmented by clear diagrams.

If you are considering a model railway layout and don't know where to start, you could do worse than invest in this book.

4 out of 5 stars A very informative book   August 23, 2002

A very informative book with very hepful hints helps with ideas and layouts. Mostly using diagrams and lacking good colour photographs it gives the reader the basics and then leaves the reader to use their imagination to complete the layout.

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive guide for the all modellers   August 16, 1999
57 out of 59 found this review helpful

As well as covering baseboard construction and topics commonly found in books on model railways, this book also covers prototypical operations, explaining how sidings and loops are used in real life, helping you plan your layout. I'd thoroughly recommend this book to anyone planning to build a layout.
